On November 21, 2022, Adriana Szilagyi-Kovacs, 74, went “upstairs” peacefully after a long
battle with cancer. Known as Mom, Abu, Auntie, or Adri, she leaves behind family and friends
who will miss her dearly.
Adriana was born in Uruguay on October 19, 1948 to Irene Kovacs and the late Adam Szilagyi.
While Uruguay was always home, she spent most of her life in the United States.
Adriana was a generous soul, wanting to help others. Adriana’s love of languages, she spoke
five, led her to a fulfilling career as an interpreter. Her mother taught her to sew and knit which
resulted in many hats, scarves, blankets, and booties lovingly made for family, friends,
coworkers, and community organizations throughout her lifetime. She donated to several
charities to help those in need.
Adriana loved many things- shoes, plants, jewelry, gemstones, Jeopardy, and the beach. More
than anything, she loved her family. Her words of encouragement and sense of humor will be
missed by those closest to her.
Adriana is survived by her mother, Irene Szilagyi of Uruguay, husband Jay Sweet of
Connecticut, brother Pablo Szilagyi of Uruguay, son Gabriel Mendez of Florida, daughters
Carolina Mendez-Korczynski of Connecticut and Veronica Huffman of North Carolina, and her
sister Maria Ziobron of North Carolina. She also leaves behind stepchildren, nieces, nephews,
and grandchildren who she loved.
The graveside service will be held on Friday, November 25, 2022 at 3:00 pm at Stanly Gardens of Memory in Albemarle officiated by Rev. Don Burleyson. Burial will follow at the Stanly Gardens of Memory at 2001 East Main St., Albemarle.
The family would like to thank her oncology team at the Levine Cancer Institute and the staff at
Trinity Place for the love, support, and care they provided.
To sum things up in her last words spoken with a smile on her face- “This sucks.”
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Levine Cancer Institute of Albemarle through
Atrium Health.
Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the Szilagyi-Kovacs family.
