Robert Jones

January 29, 1944 — December 1, 2020

Robert "Bob" Kent Jones, 76, gained his angel wings on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, at Grand Strand Regional Hospital in Myrtle Beach, SC, following only several weeks of declining health.  He was surrounded by his wife and two sons.

Bob was born January 29, 1944, in Rowan County, to the late Robert A. Jones and Mozelle C. Jones.  Bob is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Judy Yow Jones; sons, Kevin H. Jones (Kandy) of Concord and Michael Jones of Rockwell; granddaughters, McKenzie Jones and Hayden B. Jones; grandson, Spencer Jones; sister, Lea Jones King of Salisbury; brother, Barry S. Jones of Salisbury; special brother and sister-in law, Archie and Wanda Ritchie of Concord; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bob graduated from Winecoff High School in 1962.  He also served in the United States Navy from 1962-1966 and was a Vietnam Veteran, serving aboard the USS Independence Aircraft Carrier.  After serving in the US Navy, he had a distinguished career with United Parcel Service, from 1967 until retiring in 1989, having held several management positions with them.

Bob is a long time member of McGill Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon.

Bob was a passionate advocate for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental disabilities and was a member of the Civitan Organization from 1989 until his passing.  During his 30 plus years in the Civitan Organization, he was an active member of several different Civitan Clubs.  He was NC District West Governor from 2008-2009 and served on the Civitan International Board from 2013-2020.  He was Civitan International President-Elect 2017-2018 and Civitan International President 2018-2019.  During Bob's time of service in Civitan, he received many distinguished honors including the Club, District, International and Presidential Honor Keys as well as many other honors and awards.

Bob volunteered a lot of his time for numerous projects in Cabarrus County and surrounding areas while serving in Civitan.  His most passionate project was Victory Junction Camp, where he served as a volunteer counselor and a liaison for the camp and North Carolina West Civitan.  For 10 years, he raised money for Victory Junction by hosting a benefit golf tournament at Irish Creek.  Bob was affectionately known by his Civitan family as Mr. Rogers.

Bob’s hobbies included golf, where he was a longtime member of The Club at Irish Creek and President of the OMEGA golf association.  Bob was very active with the Cabarrus County Senior Center and was state champion in cornhole at the Senior Games.  He was a very avid fan of the Andy Griffith Show and could routinely be heard quoting Barney Fife’s lines from his favorite episodes.  He enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, spending time with his grandchildren and relaxing at his vacation home in Cherry Grove.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 6, 2020, from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm, at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord.  A funeral service in celebration of Bob's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, December 7, 2020, at Hartsell Funeral Home's chapel in Concord, officiated by Rev. Dr. Steve Ayers.  Following the service, Bob will be laid to rest with Navy honors at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.
