Alice Huckabee Crowell, 102, died February 21, 2013, at Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh, N. C. The daughter of Mollie Harris and William Thomas Huckabee, Alice was born September 27, 1910, in Albemarle, N. C, and lived most of her life there. She graduated from Duke University in 1932, having served as vice president of Student Government and president of Kappa Delta Sorority and then taught elementary school in Raleigh, Rockingham, and Albemarle. In 1944 she married Reginald Alexander Crowell, also of Albemarle, and they were happily married until his death in 1977. Alice was an active member of her church and of her community. At Central United Methodist Church in Albemarle, she served as trustee, member of the Administrative Board, president of United Methodist Women, Circle chair, and Sunday School teacher. In addition, she belonged to the Mamie Crowell Garden Club (named for her husband’s mother), the World Book Club, and the Friends of the Library at Pfeiffer College. When Alice moved in 1996 to Springmoor to be near her daughter, she became an associate member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church where she served as lay shepherd and was active in UMW. She is survived by her daughter Molly Crowell Watters and husband John L. Watters, Jr.; his children: John P. Watters and Kate Watters Bissonnette; and three great-grandchildren. She is survived as well by a large family of nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren, with whom she was extraordinarily close. Alice and her family greatly appreciate Dr. Wells Edmundson and her care giver/friends Bonnie Sides and Norma Matthews. They, the staff of the Clinic and Stewart Health Center, and her many Springmoor friends enriched the latter part of her life. Graveside service will be held in Albemarle, 10 AM Monday, February 25 at Fairview Memorial Park, 1425 E. Main Street. Interment will be followed by an 11 o’clock memorial service at Central United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. Sunday, March 3, at 2 PM there will be a memorial service in the auditorium at Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh. Memorial gifts may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 172 North Second Street, Albemarle NC 28001, or to Edenton Street United Methodist Church, 228 West Edenton Street, Raleigh NC 27603. Alice was imbued with kindness, strong faith, intellect, and a keen sense of humor. She loved her family and friends and let them know that every day of her life.
