Anna Catherine Walter Ballenger, 89 years of age, of Winston-Salem and formerly of Stanly County, passed away on March 14, 2017, at her residence at Brighton Gardens of Winston-Salem.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Friday, March 31, 2017 at Hartsell Funeral Home, 522 N. Second St., Albemarle, NC 28001. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Christ Episcopal Church with the Father Jim Bernacki officiating. Burial will follow in the church columbarium.
Born January 10, 1928, in Alexandria, VA, she was the daughter of the late Oakley Stuart Walter and Mary Kerrick (Cary) Walter. She also is preceded in death by her brothers; Oakley Stuart Walter and Earle Maxwell Walter and her former husband, Dr. Claude N. Ballenger, Jr.
Anna Catherine was a 1945 graduate of George Washington High School in Alexandria, Virginia where she received the Spirit of Youth Award. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1949 from James Madison College. Anna Catherine started her career as an administrative assistant at the U.S. Pentagon and then moved on to work at the Judge Advocate’s General School at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. After moves to St. Louis, MO and El Paso, TX, she relocated to Albemarle, NC, where she raised her three children and worked as Parish Secretary for Christ Episcopal Church and Central United Methodist Church. She was a long-time member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Albemarle.
A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and life-long sports fan, Anna Catherine’s greatest joys in life came from her family, ACC basketball, and trips to the beach. She also enjoyed drawing and painting.
Survivors include her three children, son Claude N. Ballenger III (Karen) of Cape Cod, MA, daughter Marianne McGraw (Doug) of Los Angeles, CA and Kathleen Ballenger of Albemarle, NC.; eight grandchildren, Jamie Stokes (John), Cary Allen, Melanie McGraw (Greg), Jennifer McGraw, Kevin McGraw, Grace Ballenger, Adam Foreman and Andrew Ballenger; and one great granddaughter, Finley Catherine Stokes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 428 Pee Dee Avenue, Albemarle, NC 28001.
