Annie Poplin

Annie Lee Poplin, age 97 of Albemarle, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2012, at her home. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle on Wednesday, February 1 from 3:00 PM until 4:00 PM. The funeral service will follow in the Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Tab Whitley and Rev. Mark Little. Burial will follow at Silver Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. At other times, the family will meet at her home. Mrs. Poplin was born in Stanly County on July 31, 1914, to the late “S.H.” Sylvanus Halton Whitley and the late Mary Dorann Smith Whitley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Vance James Poplin, in 1982. She is survived by a son, Mike Poplin; a daughter, Sandra Morris, both of Albemarle; a sister, Lillie Bell Morton of Holden Beach; three grandchildren, Jeff Morris, Michelle Ratliff, and Lee Ann Caviness; eight great-grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren. Mrs. Poplin worked at Wiscassett Mills for many years but most people will remember her as the friendly receptionist at the Heart of Albemarle Motel, where she never met a stranger.
