Mrs. Barbara Jane Woody Frederick, 93, of Albemarle, passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at Atrium Health Stanly Hospital.
Born on January 17, 1931, in Roxboro, NC, Barbara was the daughter of the late James Jennings and Myrtice Brooks Woody. Barbara was also predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Leon Frederick, whom she had married in 1952.
She is survived by their three children, John Frederick of Greenville, SC, Charles Frederick (Sandy) of Asheville, and Laura Averette (Brad) of Apex; four grandchildren, Brooks Frederick (Stephanie) of Denver, CO, Anna Nichols (Christopher) of Cary, Marshall Dobbins (Jonny) of Charlotte, and Lydia Averette of Raleigh; great-granddaughters, Julia and Molly Nichols, and Whitley Dobbins; great-grandsons, Kevin and Azariah Bryant; and brother, James J. Woody, Jr. (Darcus), of Roxboro.
A graduate of Roxboro High School, Barbara also graduated from Stephens College, Columbia, MO; and Richmond Professional Institute of William & Mary, Richmond, VA. While attending Stephens, she received a certificate as an Equestrian Instructor. Barbara was employed as a secretary in a real estate/insurance office in Philadelphia, PA; secretary to a Bank President in Roxboro, NC; and as Financial Secretary of First Baptist Church in Albemarle, NC.
Barbara served First Baptist Church of Albemarle as president of the Women’s Mission Union; a Sunday School (Bible School) teacher for 64 years; Chairman of Finance and Financial Oversight Committees, and member of Pastor Search Committees. She also served on the Board of Habitat for Humanity, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Barbara enjoyed her horses and years of horseback riding, bridge, tennis, reading and taking long walks. Possessing a sharp sense of humor, she enjoyed time with her friends, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and took pride in their accomplishments and contributions to their churches and communities.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday November 13, 2024, at First Baptist Church in Albemarle at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Dr. Kendell Cameron. Inurnment will follow at the First Baptist columbarium. The family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall after the service.
