Georgeville---Ben B. Black, Sr. of Georgeville went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at CMC-Northeast, Concord, after a brief illness. Visitation will be at Hartsell Funeral Home on Branchview Drive in Concord from 6-8PM on Monday, January 11, 2010.
A funeral service will be held at Center Grove United Methodist Church on Hwy. 200 in Georgeville at 2PM on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The Rev. Alan Thompson will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Ben was born in Cabarrus County on December 16, 1922 to the late Martha Dora Black and William “Bill†Black. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie Shinn Black; sisters, Edna Polk and Rachel Allen; and brothers, Brady Black and William “WF†Black, Jr.
He is survived by his present wife of 9 years, Janice Lisk Black of the home; two sons, Ben Black, Jr and wife, Linda, and Larry Black and wife Linda; a brother Homer Fess Black; a step-daughter Gena Denson; a step-son Mike Lisk; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and 5 step-grandchildren.
Ben served honorably in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the South Pacific aboard the LCI 726 and LST 274. He participated in the Saipan, Marianas, Tinian and Palau Landings as well as the landing at Kwajalein in 1944. He retired as Cabarrus County Highway Maintenance Supervisor for the N.C. Dept. of Transportation after 40 years of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Center Grove United Methodist Church and mailed to Helen Shinn, 5291 Cauble Road, Mt. Pleasant, NC 28124.
