Ben Johnston Howie, age 94, of Harrisburg, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at home with family by his side.
Johnston was born May 27, 1923 at his home in Harrisburg to the late Zeke and Claude Howie. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Barbara Winecoff Howie; brother, Ray Howie; and sister, Blanche H. Brock.
Johnston proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army. He enjoyed farming and sharing the fruits of his labor with friends and neighbors. Johnston was a devoted christian, father and grandfather. He was a lifetime member of Rocky River Presbyterian Church and gave many years of service to his church family. He would do anything for anybody in the community. Johnston will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Those left to treasure his memory include daughter, Imogene Herman of Taylorsville; daughter, Harriette Jakiela of Harrisburg; son, William (Birgitta) Howie of Cary; seven grandchildren, Marshall, Jeff and Greg Newman, Jonathan (Jessica) Howie, Julia (Drew) Thomas, Linnea Howie and Ben (Noel) Jakiela; and two great grandchildren, Allison Newman and Greyson Jakiela.
A memorial service to celebrate Johnston's life will be held Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Rocky River Presbyterian Church, 7940 Rocky River Road, Concord, officiated by Rev. Dr. Neal Carter. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church, beginning at 2:00 pm. At all other times, friends are welcome to visit the Howie family at Harriette Jakiela's home. Johnston will be laid to rest during a private burial in the church cemetery at a later date.
