Mr. Bennie Fred "Pop" Blackwelder, Sr. 75 of 2443 Tilley Road Concord passed away peacefully on Sunday night, March 21, 2010 at his home. Born on November 20, 1934 in Cabarrus County to the late Oscar Rufus Blackwelder and the late Mattie Lee Shue Blackwelder. Also preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Blondell Fay Hartsell Blackwelder. Mr. Blackwelder worked as a doffer for Cannon Mills, then as a clerk for Cabarrus Food Center, then retired from Food Lion as a grocery manager. Bennie was a very active member of Branchview First Church Of God. He played for The Mill League semi-pro baseball plant #5 in the, late 40’s and, early 50’s. Pop was very involved with his family, especially his grandchildren. The family meeting place will be the home. A visitation will be held at Hartsell Funeral Home Concord on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 from 6 until 8 PM. Funeral services will be held at Branchview First Church of God on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 11 AM, with the Rev. Carlton Davidson , and the Rev. Mike Mullis officiating. Burial will follow at West Concord Cemetery. Survived by: sons, Fred Blackwelder and wife Denise of Gold Hill, NC and Jeff Blackwelder and wife Wanda of Morris, AL; daughters, Janice Lord and husband David of Churchland, NC, and Susan Lomax and husband Brian of Concord, NC: sister, Margie Johnson of Statesville; grandchildren, Josh, Tiffanie, and Kacie Lord, Amanda Blackwelder, Alisha Blackwelder, Allen and Natalie Lomax, and Jada and Brittney Harris: great-grandchildren, Jayden and Presley Harris. The family wishes to give special thanks to Teresa Ellison, caregiver, Dr. G. Schwartz, Dr. H. Rhee, Dr. M. Duggal, and the staff of Hospice. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County 5003 Hospice Lane Kannapolis, NC 28083. Hartsell Funeral Home Concord is serving the Blackwelder family.
