Our beloved mother and friend, Betty Mel Pettus Battle, 74, of Charlotte, has been peacefully removed from our midst by the hand of death on Friday, November 5, 2010. Although the heart is broken and the joy of life is gone, death may break the earthly bond but true affections cannot die where hearts are warm and fond. She was born on December 9, 1935 in Clover, SC to the late William Boyce Pettus and the late Ida Falls Pettus. She was the 13th of 16 children. A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at New Hampton Presbyterian Church, 211 Hampton Church Road, Charlotte, NC from 12:00 until 1:00 pm. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm with Rev. Richard McNeil and Rev. Elijah Freeman officiating. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis. At other times, the family will be meeting at the home of daughter Beverly Alexander, 1800 Sir Anthony Drive, Charlotte, NC. She attended Johnson C. Smith University and was a graduate of Caldwell Community College, receiving her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a life long member of Dulatown Presbyterian Church where she served on the Board of Dulatown Outreach Center as secretary and treasurer. She was active with the Girl Scouts, 4 H Club, NAACP and Avon, as a representative. She retired from Caldwell Memorial Hospital in December, 2001 after 30 years of service, after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She later moved to Charlotte, where she attended New Hampton Presbyterian Church. She is preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Christina. Ms. Betty leaves to cherish, the father of their five children, Harold Battle Sr., of Washington, DC; sons, Harold Battle Jr., of Durham, NC and Mark Battle, of Asheville, NC; daughters, Phyllis Cerrato (Herman), of Tampa, Florida, Beverly Alexander (Jerry), of Charlotte, NC, Cathy Moore (William), of Concord, NC; 12 grandchildren, Chad, Lavina, Whitney, Mecca, Lamar, Ryan, Markel, Stephonia, Catherina, Dion, Elizabeth, and Aiden; great grandchilren, Emanuel, Armais, Jade, and Caden; sister, Audrey Pettus; sister in laws, Elouise Pettus, and Geneva Pettus; and a host of nieces,nephews and friends.
