Betty Spivey Smith, 86, of Peachland, passed away Friday, November 8, 2024, at Spring Arbor Assisted Living with Tillery Compassionate Care Hospice in Albemarle. She was born October 8, 1938, in Sanford to Howard Mack Spivey Sr. and Alice Margaret Spivey Holder. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Howard Mack Spivey, Jr.; husband, Jay Lee Smith; and infant son, Charles Edward Helms.
She was raised on a tobacco farm and graduated from Deep River School. After business college, she married and moved to Union County. Betty was devoted to God, her family and church. She taught Sunday school and led singing at church. Betty was known for her bright smile and warm personality. She was a great cook who loved gardening vegetables and flowers, especially zinnias.
She was an avid reader who worked at Piedmont High School in Union County as a library assistant. She traveled to over half of the United States, Mexico and Canada. Her most recent trip was to Michigan to the Great Lakes, Mackinaw Island and Niagara Falls. Betty’s strong faith in Jesus Christ helped her through many difficult events in her life. Her favorite Bible verse was Romans 8:31, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”
The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:45, November 12, 2024, at Mount Moriah United Methodist Church, Marshville. The funeral service will be at 2:00 in the sanctuary, officiated by Rev. Larry Watts. Burial will follow at Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church Cemetery at 6722 Hwy. 218 East, Marshville.
She is survived by two daughters, Angela Helms Smith (Wesley) of Marshville; Alisa Helms Hatley of Peachland; stepdaughter, Gail Sturgeon (Ronnie) of Polkton; sister, Grace Bailey (Don), and brother, Joe Spivey (Anita) of Sanford; grandchildren Clint Smith (Erin) and Marsha Smith Pierce (Lee) of Marshville; Joy Smith Gfeller (Zach), Dixie Smith Cartelli (Robert) of Olalla, WA, Emily Hatley Snodgrass (Colton), and Ashley Hatley of Polkton; great grandchildren; Sawyer, Turner, Hattie, Adley, Alden, Colven, Creighton, Wren and Charlie.
Her family wishes to thank her amazing caregivers at her home: Sherri, Cora Lee, Cindy, Ella, LeAnna, Brandie, Kim and Lisa; and the wonderful Cottage staff at Spring Arbor of Albemarle who lovingly cared for her during her last months.
