Billy J. Staton, 91, of Salisbury, NC passed away Monday, December 23, 2024, at Trinity Oaks Assisted Living Facility.
Bill was born on Dec. 31st, 1932, in Scranton, Kentucky to the late Billie T. Staton and Maggie Lea Cecil Staton.
He was also preceded in death by his wife Mildred (Millie) Altenburg Staton & daughter, Janet Lea Staton, brother Courtney Staton and sister Geneva Reynolds.
Bill graduated from Monroe High School & joined the US Navy in 1951 and served 4 years. He was stationed for 2 years in Jacksonville, FL & 2 years in Little Creek, VA.
Bill married Mildred Mary Altenburg on Dec. 11, 1955 & moved to Middletown, Ohio.
Due to job relocations, he and family also lived in Chicago, Il, Union NJ, Fishkill, NY & Concord, NC.
Bill by nature, was a kind and gentle man, loved and admired by his family & those who knew and worked with him.
Bill and his family were members at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Fishkill, NY, where he served as an usher, greeter, and a member and chairman of the property committee.
In 1981, Bill and his family moved to Concord, NC, where he continued employment with IBM, retiring after 26 years, in 1991, at the age of 58.
Bill was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Concord, NC, where he served on the church council, property committee, helped with construction of several Habitat Houses, served as a volunteer with the Life-Line program and a member of the Calvary’s Lutheran Men in Mission. He was presented with an Honorary Life Membership in the NC Lutheran Men in Mission on Dec. 15, 2002, in recognition of his unswerving dedication to his family, to his church and to his community and in appreciation for his ceaseless work for our Lord.
Bill would always try to help anyone in need and would always donate his blood and plasma multiple times for many years.
He was also involved in the Alzheimer’s Walk in 2015.
After retirement, he enjoyed buying and fixing up houses.
In his younger years, Bill loved to travel and camp with his wife and 4 children. He also loved the game of golf and golfed for 25 years up until his 90th birthday and won many awards and trophies. He was a great golfer, but modest when discussing his game.
His greatest joy in life was his large family.
Is survived by; son Chris and wife Kathy Staton, of Simpsonville, SC; daughters, Jill Huneycutt of Mooresville, NC; Laura Wilhelm and husband Trent of Salisbury, NC.; 8 grandchildren, Michael, Jenn, Christie, Madison, Mackenzie, Carlyle, Tyler and Hayley and 14 great grandchildren.
There will be a visitation, January 13, 2025 from 12:00 - 12:45pm at Calvary Lutheran Church, 950 Bradley Street, NE, Concord, NC 28025. Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 pm. The burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, 601 Mt Olivet Road, Concord, NC 28025.
