Bobby Eugene Myers, 84 years of age, of Concord, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2018. He was born July 7, 1933 in Thomasville, NC, the only child, to the late Lloyd E. Myers and Myrtle Woodard. He was also preceded in death by wife Mildred Lloyd Myers.
Bobby lived in Charlotte from September 1959 until July 2003. He married the late Mildred Lloyd from Charlotte, December 15, 1963. Together they had two sons, Richard Lee Myers and Robert Lloyd Myers. He married Cladis Bradshaw Martin a former school mate from Thomasville, on June 7, 2003 and moved to Concord.
The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm, Monday, January 15, 2018 at Hartsell Funeral Home, Harrisburg. The funeral service will be on Tuesday at 1 pm at Newell Baptist Church, 9115 Newell Baptist Church Rd, Charlotte, 28213 officiated by Rev. Scott Keith. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
Survivors include wife, Cladis Myers of the home; sons, Robert (Elizabeth) Myers, chief in the Charlotte Fire Department, and Richard (Nikki) Myers, pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Union County, NC; three step-daughters Dr. Barbara (Yates) Lennon, High Point, NC; Beverly (Dennis) McCarter of High Point, NC; and Bonnie Murdock of Thomasville, NC; four granddaughters, Ashlee, Abigail, Rebekka and Sophie Myers; five step grandchildren Clara, Zachery Lennon, Andrew McCarter, Laura and Ryan Murdock and 3 step great grandchildren.
Bobby graduated from Thomasville High School in 1951 where he played basketball and baseball and two years of American Legion. He attended Gardner-Webb College, 1951-53 and was a pitcher on Carolinas Junior College championship baseball team. He reported sports scores and wrote feature stories on athletes to work his way through college. He received a BA in journalism from UNC Chapel Hill in 1958 after serving two years in the US Army; 15 months at Fort Knox, KY where he wrote Student Regiment news for post newspaper.
Bobby's career as a sports writer spanned 50 years, 40 covering NASCAR. He is a former sports editor of Shelby Daily Star, 1953-54; worked 25 years for the old Charlotte News, 1959-85 and five years for the Charlotte Observer, retiring in 1990 to consult for McLean Marketing and cover NASCAR primarily for Circle Track Magazine. Myers won numerous sports writing awardsk including first place in theNorth Carolina Press Association in 1966 and two of the most prestigious in motorsports, the Henry McLemore Award in 1970 and National Motorsports Press Association Writer of the Year in 1991. He was a lifetime member of the NMPA. He served on a panel of motorsports writers who selected the National Driver of the Year and on voting panels for three halls of fame.
Myers was a longtime member (joined in 1992) and a Deacon at Newell Bapist Church in Charlotte. He loved God and his church. "God carried me for a few years when I needed him most, and I've tried to be a good Christian ever since."
