Biography

Mr. Byron Kenneth “Ken” Turner, 77, of Locust, NC passed away peacefully, Monday, October 24, 2016 at his home. Ken was born on August 2, 1939, the son of Beulah and Grady Turner. He married Linda Gail Carriker on July 2, 1961.

In his career, Ken was the youngest Plant Manager of Cannon Textile Mills in Concord, NC, overseeing 150 women. Ken’s hobbies included woodworking, restoring Volkswagen Beetles, and hunting at the “old place.” His passion was the sport of pitching horseshoes with the Frog Pond Horseshoe Team. He won multiple State Championships in this sport and continued to play until his early 70s.

Ken is well known in his family, community, and church as a quiet and humble man that would give more to others than himself. He enjoyed helping others by cutting wood, building decks and other carpentry work. Ken’s greatest joy came from the unselfish love for his family. He dearly loved his wife, along with his three daughters. Always wishing he had a son, Ken was blessed with four grandsons all of which he adored. Ken’s family candidly recalls his enjoyment of the love his pets always showed him, caring for his beautiful purple dew, as well as, eating his favorite foods which included Whispering Pines BBQ, pecan rolls and chocolate covered cherries.

Ken is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda Gail Turner of Locust, NC. His legacy continues through his three daughters and their families: Shanna and her husband Dan Meehan of Locust, NC, Kendra Shaver of Charlotte, NC, and Starla and her husband Eddie Williams of Marshville, NC. He anchored their lives with his enduring patience and unconditional love. Ken was the Godly leader of his family and embodied Proverbs 22:6 “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” His grandsons Turner Meehan, Joshua Williams, Chandler Williams, and Devin Reynolds will cherish fond memories of their “Paw Paw” taking trips with them in his Volkswagen, riding them on his Wheel Horse lawnmower, and enjoying their times at the river. He is also survived by his sister, Agnes Stewart.

Funeral Services will be held at Bethel Baptist Church, Locust NC at 4pm Thursday, October 27, 2016. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland on Wednesday, October 26th, 2016 from 6pm to 8pm.
