Calvin J. “C. J.†Barbee, 88, of Oakboro, passed away Friday, December 14, 2012 at Stanly Regional Medical Center in Albemarle. Mr. Barbee was born April 17, 1924 in Stanly County to the late Matthew Levi Barbee and the late Ethel Martha Huneycutt Barbee. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Margie Brattain Barbee, on October 2, 2012; his brothers, Berton, Grover, Jacob, Dillon, and M. L., Jr.; and his sisters, Gladys Barbee Efird and Sally Pauline Barbee. He was a WWII veteran of the Army serving in Italy and Germany. He retired from Otis Elevator Company in 1984. C. J. was a founding member of Oakboro Rural Volunteer Fire Department and served for 50 years. He was Fire Chief for six years. C. J. was also one of a group of citizens who dedicated their time to the organization of the Town of Red Cross. He was elected as one of the first councilmen, served as Chairman of Planning and Zoning, and continued to be an active member of the town. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, with a 30 minute state prior to the service, at Bethel Baptist Church of Locust. Pastor Charlie Littlejohn and Chip Alsobrooks will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Graveside military rites will be presented by the Stanly County Chapter 12 DAV. At other times, the family will meet at his home. He is survived by his son, Gene S. Barbee and wife, Patricia, of Duluth, GA.; his daughter, Carolyn Faust and husband, Rex, of New London; his brother, Harvey Barbee of Frisco, Texas and Cecil Barbee of Oakboro; his sisters, Julia Ferguson of Concord, Marie Stogner of Norwood, and Kathryn Eudy of Mt. Pleasant; his grandchildren, Shea Morton and wife, Ashley, of Oakboro; Phillip Morton and wife, Tara, of Concord; Matthew Barbee of Portland, OR; and Kristin Leonato and husband, Leo, of Fairfax, VA; great-grandchildren, Elijah Morton, Shaphan Morton, Ashton Morton, Alex Leonato and Amy Leonato; and his two best friends, Goldie and Cookie.
