Calvin Eudy

Calvin Coolidge "Coot" Eudy, 88 years of age, of Oakboro, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2014 at his home.

Coolidge was born October 21, 1925 in Stanly County to the late Charlie H. Eudy and the late Carrie Corri Burleyson Eudy. He was also preceded in death by brother, Coy Lee Eudy; and sisters, Louise Lowder, Shirley Turner, and Ruby Carter.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Monday, August 4, 2014 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The funeral service, officiated by Dr. Wayne Bennett, will be at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 17236 Frog Pond Rd., Oakboro. He will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. The burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Stanly County DAV, Chapter 12. At other times the family will be gathering at his home.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Ruth Austin Eudy of the home; son, Charles Larry Eudy and wife Vicki of Oakboro; daughter, Barbara K. Eudy of Oakboro; brothers, J.C. Eudy of Belmont, Marvin Eudy, and Dale Eudy, both of Oakboro; grandchildren, Brian Eudy of Locust, Jennifer Shue of Oakboro, and Melissa Smith of Stanfield; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Maycee Williams, Lillie Grace and Brayden Eudy, Kade Shue, and Jacob and Ashley Smith; and great great-grandchild, Daniel.

Coolidge served his country honorably in the US Navy during WWII in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign, Philippine Islands. He was awarded medals for exceptional bravery; including eight Battle Stars, the American Area Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He was also credited with having saved 13 lives, as a result of being a tremendous swimmer. He was dedicated to his military service and felt he was honored to save lives instead of taking lives.

Coolidge was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He enjoyed spending time with his family and working as both a farmer and a carpenter.
