Carolyn Hutchins Dewey, 94 years of age, of Charlotte, was called home on Sunday, June 12, 2016.
Carolyn was born and raised in Spencer, NC to the late John A.Hutchins and the late Carrie Horne Hutchins.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles A. Dewey, Jr,, son, Charles "Pete" A. Dewey III , and several siblings.
Carolyn will lie in state from 1pm to 5pm on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland, 13575 Broadway Ave., Midland, NC 28107. A Graveside Service officiated by her great niece, Rev. Hadley Kifner will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, June 17, 2016 at Forest Lawn East Cemetery, 3709 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, NC. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Susan McGarity.
She lived in Charlotte for 68 years. She graduated from Spencer High School, attended Furman University until her studies were interrupted by WWII. She received a degree in Elementary Education from Catawba College. She taught pre-school and kindergarten for Dilworth Methodist Church, Carmel Presbyterian Church and finally retired from Lansdowne Elementary School teaching first grade.
Carolyn touched many lives in many ways. She was a very positive person and always had a smile on her face no matter how much pain she might be enduring. Carolyn was a devoted Christian that set by example, always encouraging, a great cook, a fabulous seamstress and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and GiGi. She will be missed by so many.
She is survived by two daughters, Nancy D. Faison (Garland)-Charlotte and Susan D. McGarity (DeArmon)-Charlotte; grandchildren, Alex Dewey ( Melanie) Fort Mill, SC, Amber F. O’Connell (David) Chicago, IL, Davidson McGarity, Charlotte, and Carrie M. Smith (Tyler) Huntersville; great grandchildren; Will Dewey and Kaleb Dewey, both of Fort Mill, SC, Lauren and Lilly O’Connell, both of Chicago, IL; sister-in law, Nancy D. Sisk Asheville NC; nephews, John H. Horne (Laura) Laurinburg NC, Wayne Sisk (Toni) and James Sisk ( Amy), both of Charlotte; and niece, Ann H. Willeford, Seattle, WA.
Special thanks to all of the staff at Brookdale Cotswold, especially Helena, Kerri, Margaret, Blake, and Madison; to Dr.Mac White for his many years of loving care and kindness; and also, Michele, Karl, and Diane from Community Home Care and Hospice for their loving care during her last days.
