Carrie “Newell” Turner Broadway, 88, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Wilora Lake Healthcare Center. Mrs. Broadway was born on June 3, 1924 in Polkton, NC a daughter of the late George McKinley and Lula Mae Turner. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Broadway, Jr. in 1992, a brother, Muldrow, and a sister, Rachael. She attended Burnsville High School where she won a medal in girls basketball. Newell married the late James T. Broadway and moved to Charlotte in 1949. She enjoyed many years of bowling, trips to their home at Garden City beach, and working in her garden. She loved to can vegetables and cook for others. She worked many years as a beautician at her own salon, Newell’s Wig & Beauty Salon. She was a long standing member of Oakhurst Baptist church. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland and from 10:15 – 11:00 at the church on Tuesday. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Oakhurst Baptist Church, 5037 Monroe Road in Charlotte, officiated by her nephew, Rev. David Turner. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 5400 Monroe Road, Charlotte. Surviving are her two sons, Ken (Lynn) Broadway and Jerry (Margie) Broadway both of Charlotte; her grandchildren, Chris Broadway of Roswell, GA, Heath (Courtney) Broadway, and Kelly Broadway both of Charlotte; four great-grandchildren, Brayden and Thompson Broadway of Charlotte, and Taylor and Bryce Broadway of Roswell, GA; her siblings, Theron (Faye) Turner of Mint Hill, Dolly (Phillip) Turner of Charlotte, Doris Tucker of Conway, SC, and Don Turner of Charlotte. The family requests memorials made to Oakhurst Baptist Church, 5037 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28205 or to a charity of one's choice. Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland is serving the Broadway family.
