Charles Elwood Hopkins, 81, of New London, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2017 at his home.
Charles was born April 28, 1936 in Stanly County to the late Charlie Lee Hopkins and the late Ruth Isabel Eury Hopkins. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Carly "Tim" Hopkins.
There are no services at this time.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Marjorie Ann Silva Hopkins of the home; sons, Michael Hopkins of Bartlett, TN, Robert McIntyre of Niceville, FL, Leo McIntyre and wife Maggie of Round Hill, VA; sisters, Hattie Johnson of Ocean Isle Beach; Pamela MacAnaulty of Shallotte, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Charles retired after 22 years of service with State of North Carolina as a water treatment operator. He honorably served his country in the United States Air Force as a Communication Center Supervisor for 20 years. He was highly decorated, being awarded the Bronze Star; Joint Service Commendation Medal; Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters; Presidential Unit Citation; Outstanding Unit Award; Air Force Good Conduct Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Good Conduct Award; National Defense Service Medal with two Service Stars; Vietnam Service Medal with three Campaign Stars; Air Force Longevity Service Award with three Oak Leaf Clusters; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Republic of Vietnam, Psychological Warfare Medal, and many other decorations for his service during Vietnam. Charles was an outdoorsman, and he loved to travel.
