Charles William Ross of Midland, North Carolina, died Monday at CMC Northeast. He was born February 5, 1944 in Bud, WV. His parents, Charles James and Hilda Jane Ross, preceded him in death. Charles is survived by his children Edwina Lynn Ross Milam (Donald) and Charles William Ross II (Kathi), and their mother, Judith Hall Ross, of Beckley, WV, five grandchildren McKenzie and Cooper Milam, Lane, Paizlei, and Bailei Ross, and his spouse of many years Terri Johnson, of the home, three brothers, Thomas Edward Ross (Cheryl) of Southern Pines, NC; Carl Eugene Ross (Wanda) of Beckley, WV; and Harry Lee Ross (Lalia) of Princeton, WV; and two sisters, Betty Jane Cook of Beckley, WV, and Eileen Frances Perry of Beckley, WV and many loving nephews and nieces. Charles led a full life. He was a member of Mullens Masonic Lodge 151, Fraternal Order of Police, worked in the coal mines,of southern West Virginia, construction in Indiana and Virginia, and returned to West Virginia to serve as a constable in Barkers Ridge District, police officer and police chief in Mullens, WV where he was highly respected by his peers and others, including lawbreakers. He also taught mining safety at the community college in Pineville. Charles never met a dog or cat that did not love him. Dogs in his neighborhood looked forward to greeting Charles on his morning walks. He also adopted many abandoned and homeless dogs and cats, and had a couple dozen exotic chickens as pets. Charles was a natural-born leader, and had an uncanny ability to determine solutions to situations many others thought had no solution. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you honor Charles’ love of animals by making a donation to the animal shelter or animal rescue of your choice.
