Claire Thompson Anderson, 91, passed away peacefully on December, 18, 2020, at The Gardens of Taylor Glen in Concord, NC. She was born on November 20, 1929, in Perry, Florida to Fred and Maud Thompson.
Claire graduated from DePaul Hospital School of Nursing in Norfolk, VA, in 1949 and then joined the US Navy Corps of Nursing. While stationed at St. Albans Naval Hospital in New York, she met the love of her life, Lt. Daniel W. Anderson, USN. They married on July 31, 1952, and celebrated 59 years together before Dan's passing in 2011. Although Dan's Navy career took the family to many locations, Claire continued her nursing vocation, which she truly loved and was passionate about. She was well known for her excellent skills and love for those in her care. She was a founding member of the Women In Military Service for America Memorial in Washington, DC.
After retiring from the military, Claire and Dan eventually settled in Richmond, VA where they lived for over 20 years before moving to Concord, NC, to be closer to their daughter, Sharon.
Claire was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Maud; husband, Daniel; brothers Fred and Jim; and sister, Bea. She is survived by her four children, Lynn Clarke (Bill) of Richland, WA; David Anderson (Jenny) of Kearneysville, WV; Sharon Whedbee (Jeff) of Concord, NC; and Susan Briesmaster of Layton, UT. She is also survived by her sister, Kay Shelton, brother, Dan Thompson, and grandchildren Adrienne, Jennifer, Brandon, Aaron, Kevin, Holly, Andrew, Rebecca, Morgan, Jay, Kaylee, Bethany, Hallie, Justin, and Ryan, as well as ten great-grandchildren.
Claire was affectionately known as Moo by her grandchildren and Claire Bear by the wonderful staff at Taylor Glen, who cared for, and loved, her dearly. Her quick humor and loving spirit will be greatly missed. She will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery alongside her husband, Daniel.
In lieu of sending flowers the family has requested donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
