Curtis Hoover Smith, 95, of Oakboro, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at home.
Curtis was born June 20, 1928, in North Carolina to the late Charlie Smith and the late Dallie Morton. He was also preceded in death by wife, Laverne Whitley Smith and infant son, Nelson Smith.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday July 1, 11:00 am at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Oakboro officiated by Pastor Mark Mabry and Dr. Shad Hicks located at 17236 Frog Pond Road, Oakboro.
Curtis was a devout husband, father and grandfather. Always making time for family and fun. He enjoyed socializing, traveling, gardening, woodworking, as well as, playing cards and dominos. He encouraged his family to be the best they could be, supporting them through school, sports and other activities. Curtis always brightened the day with a joke or story to tell. He loved to make people laugh. Curtis and Laverne were married for 75 years. He joined her in heaven on their 76th wedding anniversary.
Curtis served in the U. S. Army for 2 years during the Korean Conflict.
Curtis was a devoted member of Pleasant Grove Baptist church where he served as a teacher and deacon. He was a christian who believed in service. He would lend a hand wherever needed. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels. He
assisted in opening the Oakboro History Museum. Curtis was co-owner and became sole owner of Allen Clothing Store in Albemarle for 32 years. He was committed to revitalizing Albemarle’s uptown. Curtis took great pride in serving his customers and his community.
Survivors include son, Joey (Kathy) Smith; daughters Jana (Hunt) Gwyn, and Jera (Chris) Norwood; grandchildren, Jennifer Eudy, Jessica (Brian) Blackburn, Justin Eudy, Mallory Smith, Abby Smith, and Laven Norwood; great-grandchildren, Bayleigh, Dillon, Allie,
and Emily; sister-in-law, Maxzelle Whitley.
