Mrs. Dartha Louise "Dot" Helms Vanderburg, 84, of Concord, went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at the Bob and Carolyn Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis. She was born on July 22, 1926 in Union County to the late Grover Cleveland Helms and the late Martha Eudy Helms. She was an active member of Howell’s Baptist Church in Concord as a choir member, flower committee chairman and Sunday School member. Dot was the owner and past president of Southgate Masonry and Lumber Company, Southgate Properties LLC and President of Vanderburg Enterprises LLLP and Hayden Vanderburg Enterprises Company, Inc. Dot graduated Valedictorian of Fairview High School in 1943. She married Hayden Clinton Vanderburg on December 7, 1947. Upon graduation, she worked at the Charlotte Shell Factory and Cannon Mills Plant #1 before joining her husband at Locust Hardware Company, Inc. in 1964. At his death in 1979, she became President, later moving the company to Concord and renaming it Southgate Masonry and Lumber Company, Inc. Dot loved her church, friends, sewing, cooking, baking, and traveling. One of Dot’s greatest pleasures in life was to brighten someone’s day with an element of surprise. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord on Friday, October 22, 2010 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. A celebration of Life will be held at Howell’s Baptist Church on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 3:00 pm with Rev’s Sid Martin, Ray Rippy, Edward Scott, Marvin Honeycutt, and Larry Zaky officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service with burial in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be employees of Southgate Masonry and Lumber. At other times, the family will be meeting at the home of Steve and Dakeita Johnson, 7787 Hwy 601 South in Concord. She is preceded in death by her husband, Hayden Clinton Vanderburg, who passed away in 1979; brothers, Dewey and G.C. Helms; sisters, Rachel and Lelon Deese, and Mae Gossett. She is survived by her daughter, Dakeita Vanderburg Johnson and husband, Steve, of Concord; sister, Veda Helms Medlin, of Concord; and grandchildren, Hayden Clinton Horton, Hunter Chanel Horton, of Concord and Laura Kirby Johnson, of Greer, SC.
