Daulton Joseph Smallwood, 58 years of age, of Locust, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016 at McWhorter Hospice House in Monroe.

Mr. Smallwood was born September 15, 1958 in Virginia to Daulton Joseph Smallwood, Sr. and Hazel Duncan Smallwood. In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by his two year old grandson, Daylan Joseph Smallwood; his sister, Janet Bohon; and his brother, James Smallwood.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, December 9, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Community Baptist Church, 818 North Central Avenue, Locust officiated by Rev. Landon Keziah.

A memorial service will be held in Roanoke at a later date.

In addition to his mother, Hazel of Roanoke, survivors include his wife of 31 years, Donna "Binky" Smallwood; his sons, Dylan Joseph and Gloria of Charlotte and Ethan Kane of Locust; daughter, Stephanie Shyan of Locust; his granddaughter, Saness of Charlotte; his sister, Becky and her husband, Joseph's special friend, Buddy Hale of Roanoke; his brothers, Michael and Edward, both of Roanoke; in-laws, Wendy and Craig of Elizabeth City, Jenny and David of Roanoke, Allen of Roanoke, Billy and Heather of Navarre, FL; mother-in-law, Donna of Roanoke, father-in-law, Paul and Susie of Navarre, FL; and many nieces and nephews who loved being around Uncle Joey.

Joseph never met a stranger and leaves behind many close friends, Skeeter and Rosie Alexander, Jeff Wilken, Sean Wilson, Gary Hughes, and his friend since childhood, Jesse Carr, to name a few.

Joseph was a very hard worker. He was a supervisor, and in building maintenance for over 30 years, and was always willing to help others. He enjoyed traveling and being outdoors. His favorite things included hunting, especially with his hunting buddies at the hunting club, and trout fishing in the mountains.
