David Helms

David Alan Helms, 47 years of age, of Concord, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Carolinas HealthCare System - University in Charlotte. He fought a courageous battle without ever giving up.

David was born April 10, 1969 in Stanly County to Lonnie Junior Helms and Lillie Mae Burris Helms. He was preceded in death by his father, Lonnie J. Helms, who passed away on June 27, 1996.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Friday, September 2, 2016 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The funeral service will be at 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel in Albemarle. The burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Oakboro. At other times, the family will be gathering at the home of his brother, Gary, 20101 Newsome Rd., Oakboro.

In addition to his mother, Lillie Mae Helms of Albemarle, he is survived by his beloved fiancé, Katie Sowards; two future stepchildren, Cayce and Megan Sowards, all of the home; brother, Gary Helms and wife Tammie of Oakboro; uncle, James Efird and wife Shirley of Oakboro; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

David was employed at S.J. Flowe Grading. He enjoyed his work as a heavy machine operator and doing small engine repair. He also loved riding his Harley. David was a down to earth guy who never met a stranger. He loved to laugh and make others laugh.
