David Lee Stephens, 83, a well-known and well-loved mainstay of Concord for his entire life, passed away on Tuesday, September 15. His tribute in life was his generous, easy-going nature, always considering what he could do in service for others. The family will be receiving friends at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord, NC on Friday evening, September 18, from 6-8 pm, and his funeral will be held in the sanctuary of Concord First Assembly on Saturday, September 19, at 1 pm. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Park.
David was a funny, ingenious, unselfish and generous father and human being. He grew up in Concord with humble beginnings, attended and graduated from Hartsell High School in 1950, served his country in the US Army during the Korean War as a front line “mortar man”, met his wife Ramona in Kannapolis, who he referred to as “a million dollar baby he met at the five and dime store”, worked in Cannon Mills for over 43 years, and held countless second and third jobs to make ends meet for his family. He was a founding member, steering committee member, and loyal volunteer for Concord First Assembly, helping to establish the church in the old Pastime Theater, and then moving the church to Rockland Circle and later to its current location on Highway 601 and subsequent expansion into a school and assisted living facility. He faithfully served God, the church, and the senior citizen community after his retirement for many years. The highlight of his retirement, after his first wife Ramona passed, was meeting and marrying Maude Myers. They both continued to diligently serve the senior citizen community until her passing in 2012. The stories of David’s generous nature and how he unselfishly helped others are legendary, a role to which we all should aspire.
David was born on December 12, 1931, during the height of the depression, as the fourth son of Reverend Edgar Craven Stephens and Cora Mae Helms Stephens. His first wife and mother of his children, Ramona Jean Upright Stephens, passed away in 1992. He then married Maude Key Myers in 2005. David had three brothers: Jack and Junior Stephens (who both passed away due to tragic events), and an older brother, Paul Ray Stephens, with whom he was very close until Paul’s passing in 2001. David’s younger sister, Grace Ellen Clay, passed in 2009. David deeply loved all of his direct and distant family members and cared tremendously for them throughout his life.
He is survived by his daughter, Gail Stephens Overcash (her husband Jimmy) of Mt. Pleasant, NC, and his son, David Paul Stephens (his wife Tracey Williams) of Vienna, VA. His sister-in-law, Nova Stephens, lives in Columbia, SC. David leaves four (4) grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.
David’s friends and the lives of those he touched are far too numerous and far-reaching to mention. He will be deeply and truly missed.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to all that cared for David during his final months. Their unselfish support helped make his quality of life as comfortable as possible. Special thanks go to the third floor staff at the Concord First Assembly Living Center and Hospice of Cabarrus County.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages everyone to make donations to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
