Mr. Dewey Bickett “Sonny Boy” Hickman, 93, of Concord, passed away on Monday, January 17, 2011 at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. He was born on April 4, 1917 in Lumberton, NC to the late John Fernny and Alberta Victoria Edwards Hickman. Mr. Hickman was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and a US Army veteran, serving in WWII. He was a shop foreman with Southern Pump and Tank Company for over 43 years. He was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Hickman is preceded in death by his wife Frances Ernestine Cook Hickman, who passed away on May 20, 2010. He is also preceded in death by a daughter, Sonnie Gail Gwyn. A visitation will be held at Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 from 12:30 until 1:30 pm. A funeral service will follow in the chapel at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Buster Pigg officiating. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis. He is survived by his sons, Dewey C. Hickman, of Concord and Clarence Hickman, of Boone; daughter, Connie Pearson, of Raeford; sisters, Ethel Johnson, of Concord, and Myrtle Lee Plott, of Birmingham, AL; granddaughters, Jennifer Stancil and April Gwyn Burk; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Memorials may be made to NC State Veterans Home, 1601 Brenner Avenue, Salisbury, NC 28144.
