Donald Mattern

Donald Lee Mattern, age 50, of Harrisburg, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, September 6, 2017.

Donnie was born July 27, 1967 in Wheeling, West Virginia to the late Donald Lee Mattern and the late Rosemary Mattern Garnett.

Donnie was employed by FSI Office for 19 years.

Donnie was an avid sports fan. He pulled for the Charlotte Hornets, the Maryland Terrapins, the App State Mountaineers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Houston Astros. Among them all, one of his greatest joys in life was pulling for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Football season was his favorite season. He loved all levels from Pee Wee to Pro. Even after his children graduated from high school, you could still find him at the stadium or gym cheering on the Bulls or fussing at the refs.

Donnie was well-known in Cabarrus County. He spent the Fall and Spring seasons umpiring adult league softball, and in the Winter, he would referee youth basketball.

Donnie enjoyed golfing, playing Wii golf, the History Channel, and Jeopardy where he could rattle off more answers than most contestants, no matter the subject.

He adored his family and could make his three young nephews believe anything he told them, even if it was a lie. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Survivors include beloved wife of 20 years, Nicole Morris Mattern; son, Nicholas Hough; daughter, Kendall Mattern, all of the home; sister, Kim (Jeff) Talley of Mount Pleasant, NC; grandmother, Michelle Williams of Wheeling, WV; sister-in-law, Rainey (Dwayne) McIntyre of Faith, NC; brother-in-law, Michael (Carmela) Morris of Gold Hill, NC; brother-in-law, Jared Hough; father-in-law (aka Poppy) Mike Morris of Gold Hill, NC; special cousin and friend, Doug Mattern of Harrisburg, NC; nephews, Trey and Cameron Morris, and Brady McIntyre; and extended family in Wheeling, WV.

Services will be held Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Hartsell Funeral Home, 12115 University City Blvd, Harrisburg. The family will receive friends from 4:00- 5:45pm. The funeral service will follow at 6:00pm in the chapel, officiated by Phil Long.
