Doris Almond

Doris Hatley Almond, age 89 died on Sunday, October 15 surrounded by her family. She was born on January 2, 1928 and lived in the Millingport community. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hubert Almond. She was the daughter of the late Clifford Lee Hatley and Velma Smith Hatley. Surviving is one daughter Saundra Almond Shoe and husband Larry Gene Shoe of Roxboro, one son Kyle Hubert Almond and wife Joyce Smith Almond of the Millingport community; five grandchildren Tessa Shoe Gentry and husband Kelly of Roxboro, Jocelyn Shoe Martin and husband Lewis of Roxboro, Kim Almond Speight, Shane Almond and wife Amy of the Millingport community, and Derick Almond and wife Jennifer of Norwood. Also surviving are eleven great-grandchildren: PFC Chase Gentry of Fort Jackson, SC, Cassie Gentry of Wilmington and Courtney Gentry of Roxboro, Kaylee, Breauna and Brooklyn Speight of the Millingport community, Madison, Landon and Mellinee Almond of the Millingport community and Hailey Holbrooks and Shae Almond of Norwood and one sister Ann Chandler of Huntersville. She was preceded in death by two sisters Janelle Smith and Nancy Moose.

Doris was very creative and was well known for her crafts and homemaking skills including basketry, quilting, cooking and baking. She loved traveling and in her younger years enjoyed attending many of her grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s events. She was a retired Time Keeper of Federal Pacific Electric Company and a member of Salem United Methodist Church. She was a resident of Stanly Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral arrangements are being made by Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle, NC. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle from 12:30-2pm on Tuesday, October 17 and at other times at the home of Kyle and Joyce Almond at 20569 Bear Creek Church Road in the Millingport community. Funeral services will be conducted at Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel in Albemarle at 2pm with Rev. Rob Eller of Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Concord officiating. Burial will be in Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery.
