Doris Borders

November 16, 1940 — February 9, 2013

Doris Yvonne Cranford Borders “Gram Gram”. After a courageous battle with ovarian cancer, Mrs. Doris C. Borders, 72, went to her home in heaven on the evening of Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis, NC, with her daughter, son-in-law and sister by her side. Doris was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on November 16, 1940 to the late Frank and late Wanza Cranford. When Doris was still an infant, her family moved back to Kings Mountain, NC. When Doris was 6, her father passed away. Her mother remarried to the late Alonzo Goforth and he raised her as his own. Doris graduated from Bethware School in Kings Mountain, NC and Gardner-Webb College in Boiling Springs, NC. As an accountant she worked most of her career for J. P. Smith and Company and the Charlotte Convention and Visitors Bureau (now the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority). Both of which she thoroughly enjoyed working and made great friends. Doris, affectionately known to many as “Gram Gram” was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and a good friend to many. She loved to work in her yard, planting beautiful flowers, fishing and playing golf with her late husband Frank, cards, drag racing, boating, reading, traveling, Duke basketball, bird watching, she also enjoyed giving treats to any/all dogs she met, especially to her favorite/beloved dog Savannah, spending time at her home in Oak Island, NC, but most of all she loved to spend time with her daughter, Ashlie, son-in-law, Jeff, and her two “in her eyes” the most wonderful granddaughters in the world, Lauren and Lainie. Until she got sick she didn’t miss a school function, softball game, basketball game, dance recital or whatever Lauren or Lainie were in, Gram Gram had to be there to show how proud she was of them. In addition to her parents, and stepfather, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank Borders. She is survived by her daughter, Ashlie Wright Kostelnik-Hancock, husband Jeff, and her dear, dear granddaughters Lauren and Lainie, all of Concord, NC and her sister Joan Tarlton, husband Donald of Monroe, NC plus a special niece and nephew Donna Bizri and Gary Tarlton. A memorial service to celebrate Doris’ life will be on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 3:00 pm in the chapel at Hartsell Funeral Home at 460 Branchview Drive NE, Concord, NC, officiated by the Rev. Tom Jolly. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Bridgette Miller, Nurse Kelly, all caregivers at Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County for their compassionate care while at home and 3 days at Tucker Hospice House. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5005 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081 or to Doris’ church, El Bethel United Methodist, 122 El Bethel Road., Kings Mountain, NC 28086.
