Doris Marie Burleson Crowell was born on February 11, 1931, the youngest daughter of Ed and Mary Adocia Poplin Burleson. She was married for 68 years to Clarence Allen Crowell, who passed away Christmas Day, a short 6 months ago.
She is survived by two daughters, and two very special son-in-law’s, Kathy Crowell (David) Odell and Myra Crowell (Tony) Ledbetter. She was very proud of all her grandchildren, Michele (Brad) Lowder, Windy (Erik) Frank, Wesley Calkins, Jon (Jessica) Ledbetter, Jamie (Dustin) Thompson, Jodi (Josh) Hathcock, and Jordan (Jerry) Wallace, Jamie Parker, Kelly (John) Dixon and 25 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, some very special cousins who were like siblings, and one very special companion- Nellie.
She was also preceded in death by her sister Beaulah (Boots) Burleson, and brothers Ode Burleson and Dee Burleson, and one grandson, Benjamin Crowell Calkins.
She worked many years for Wiscassett and other textile mills in the area before joining her husband in the upholstery business, where they worked side by side for over 30 years. Everyone who knew her will appreciate her sense of humor and her quick wit. While planning the funeral for her husband, when asked about a military 21 gun salute, she quickly responded “not in the church!”
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 6th, from 6 - 8 pm at Hartsell’s Funeral Home. Her funeral will be held on Friday, July 7th, at 11:00 am, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church, with Rev. Brad Hinton and Dr. Chuck Hutchens officiating. At other times the family will be at the home.
Memorial donations may be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the Crowell family.
