Doris Lene Whitley Hatley, known as "Ms. Doris" in her community and church and by many friends, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.
Ms. Hatley was born November 5, 1928 in Stanly County to the late Roy Dixon Whitley and the late Maggie Lene Yow Whitley. She was born and raised in the Love's Grove Church community where she attended in her teen and youth years.
In 1949 she and J. D. Hatley were married and lived in Mission community until J. D.'s death in 2000. Doris remained in Mission and was a nursery worker since 1964. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Clayton Whitley of Stanfield and Billy Ray Whitley also of Stanfield; and a sister, Martha Louise Whitley Blackwelder, also of Stanfield.
She is survived by two sons, James David (Hazel) Hatley of Concord and Glenn Edward Hatley of Locust and Bonnie Roberts of Concord; a daughter, MaryAnn (David) Cannon of Kannapolis; granddaughter, Angela Rose Hatley (Brandon) Almond of Albemarle; one grandson, Jason David (Sylvia) Hatley of Charlotte; one wonderful great-grandson and the apple of her eye, Silas Ladd Almond of Albemarle; a special friend "Bones"; one brother, Charles Melbourne Whitley of Stanfield; two sisters-in-law, Ancel Goforth Whitley of Stanfield and Ruth Hatley Wentz of Concord; a number of nieces and nephews, cousins, one special aunt and uncle, Marvin and Mildred Yow of Concord; and many friends.
Doris' hobbies were gardening, flowers, sewing, cooking, baking, canning and of course babies.
She attended Stanfield School. She loved people, her family, her church, friends, and God. Doris worked at Concord Knitting, Cannon Mills, and retired from Arrowood Mills of Mt. Pleasant.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Friday, March 25, 2016 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland. The funeral service will be on Saturday at 3 pm at Mission Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Jeremy Hyde, Rev. Ronnie Russell, and Rev. Jim White. Burial will follow at the Mission Baptist Church Cemetery at 12444 Mission Church Road, Locust NC 28097.
The family would like to offer a special appreciation to Adrienne Greene, Holly Books, Shelly Hyde, everyone at Tucker Hospice House, and to the members of Mission Baptist Church for their support.
