Dorothy Whitfield Whitley Plyler, age 85, of Albemarle passed away on October 11, 2011 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem, NC. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 13 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle from 6pm until 8pm. The funeral service will be held Friday, October 14 at the First Presbyterian Church, Albemarle at 11am, officiated by Rev. Elizabeth Aysque. Burial will follow at Fairview Memorial Park. She was the daughter of the late Velma Morrow and Oliver Gaines Whitley of Albemarle, and the granddaughter of the late Addie Whitfield and James McKnight Morrow of Albemarle and the late Dr. Virgil Alexander and Lilly Gaines Whitley of Albemarle. Mrs. Plyler was born in Rabun County, GA, on May 9, 1926, where her father was the resident engineer for Georgia Power Company. She was educated in the Albemarle City Schools and graduated in 1946 with honors from Peace College, Raleigh. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1938 and served there as long as she was able as a leader, teacher and pianist. She served as an Elder for one term. Recognitions of her civic service included the Stanly County Historic Preservation Commission’s Individual award for preservation work in 1991; the Albemarle Woman’s Club’s Woman of the Year award in 1996; and the N.C. Extension Homemaker’s Volunteer of the Year award in 1996. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Elworth Bane Plyler of the home; one son, David B. Plyler and his wife Johannah, of Atlanta, GA; one daughter, Peggy P. Isenhour and her husband Steve of Advance, NC; and five grandchildren, Walter Britt Plyler and wife, Khette, Mary Whitfield (Molly) Plyler, all of Atlanta, GA, Zachary Stephen Isenhour of Winston-Salem, NC, Caroline Morrow Plyler and Charles Conrad Plyler, both of Allanta, GA; two great-grandchildren, Luca Britt Plyler and Miller Canning Plyler both of Atlanta, GA; her beloved “sister” Jewel Plyler Lambert; and 2 sisters-in-law, Louise Bates and Hazel Ridenhour. She is preceded in death by her brother, O. Gaines Whitley, Jr. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stanly Community Christian Ministry, PO Box 58, Albemarle, NC 28002 or First Presbyterian Church Organ Fund, or Faith on the Fifth Fund, PO Box 1578, Albemarle, NC 28002. Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the Plyler family.
