March 29, 1926 — July 18, 2010

Dorothy Allene Burgess Smith, 84, of Barbee's Grove Rd, Oakboro passed away Sunday, July 18, 2010 at her home.

She was born in Stanly County on March 29, 1926. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lee Burgess and Octa Ora Boone Burgess, her brother, Everette Burgess, and three infant children.

She is survived by her husband Gurnie Odell Smith of the home; son Timothy Odell Smith and wife Diane of Oakboro; three grandchildren, Michael Smith, Cheri Milano and husband, Rob, and Leah Swink and husband, Jeffrey, all of Oakboro; great-granddaughter, Melanie Allene Swink (the light of her life); sisters Ora Lee Yow of Albemarle, Brenda Burris of Oakboro and Christeen Sasser of Oakboro; and many nieces, nephews, "adopted grandchildren" and dear friends.

She was a devoted member of Barbee's Grove Baptist Church. She loved her Lord and her family with all of her heart. She loved working in her garden, cooking big meals for her family, taking pictures and walking on the beach. She enjoyed a sunrise, sunset, flowers, or autumn leaves for the glorious creations that they are and appreciated each one more than most of us are able. She lived her life as an example for us all, and we are all blessed to have known her and had her in our lives. She will be in our hearts forever.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 20, from 6 pm to 8 pm at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. Funeral service will be Wednesday, July 21, at 11 am at Barbee's Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ron Honeycutt officiating. There will be a 30 minute state prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Barbee's Grove Baptist Church, PO Box 679, Oakboro, NC 28129; or to Hospice of Stanly County, 960 N. First St., Albemarle, NC 28001.

The family will meet at her home.
