Mrs. Dorthea "Reat" Smith Atkinson, 80 years of age, of Indian Trail, passed away Friday, June 27, 2014 at CMC - Union in Monroe.
Dorthea was born July 22, 1933 in Richmond County to the late Henry Smith and the late Lela Smith DeBerry. She was also preceded in death by a daughter Amy Michelle Atkinson; brothers, Robert, Vernon and Larry DeBerry, and Ernest Smith; sisters, Josephine Yarborough, Helen Biggers, Alma Tucker and Lena Bowers; and great grandchild, William Reid Efird.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The funeral service officiated by Pastor Don Thompson and Rev. James Potts will be at 11:00 AM,Thursday, July 3, 2014 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. Burial will follow at the Fairview Memorial Park, 1425 East Main Street, Albemarle, NC 28001.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, William "Bill" Atkinson of Indian Trail; two daughters, DyAnn (Lynn) Sherrin of Indian Trail, and Jean (Stan) Efird of Indian Trail; five grandchildren, Rodney (Ashley) Pace of Charleston, SC, Larry (Regina) Dennis of Indian Trail, Amy Atwell of Monroe, Matthew (Vicky) Pace of Fort Mill, and Daniel Efird of Indian Trail; and twelve great-grandchildren, Baylee Hartis, Tyler Dennis, Andrew Stegall, Brianna Efird, Serenity Wiles, Landon Dennis, Barbara Jean Efird, Emily Pace, Emma Marie Pace, Carter Pace, Shawnee Efird and Boyd Pace; three brothers, Ronnie, Bruce and Donald DeBerry; three sisters, Geneva Morris, Dorothy Almond, and Odessa Furr; and aunt, Kathleen Leviner of Wallace, SC.
Dorthea and Bill were life-long residents of Albemarle until recently when they relocated to Indian Trail to be closer to their daughters. They were long-time members of New Hope Baptist church in Albemarle.
At other times the family will be meeting at the home of brother, Ronnie DeBerry, 2221 Goodman Drive, Albemarle, NC 28001.
