Doyle Smith

Doyle Augustus Smith, 88, of Concord passed away on Monday, May 14, 2012, at Carolinas Medical Center - Northeast. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. The funeral service, officiated by, Reverend Brad Jones will follow in the Hartsell Funeral Home chapel at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Doyle was born on May 12, 1924, to the late Hall and Mary Smith. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Harry Smith; and a sister, Dorothy Smith Hartsell. He was drafted into the US Army at age 18 while going to Concord High School during the day and working in Cannon Mills, Plant 2 on the second shift to help his mother, father and younger siblings. He served in the 29th Infantry Division at Normandy and the Rhineland. Later in the war he served as an M.P. until the war ended. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ford Smith of the home; a son, Ed Smith and his wife Carla of Kannapolis; a brother, Sonny Smith and his wife Billie of Concord; a granddaughter, Emily Smith of Kannapolis; and many nieces and nephews.
