Durwood Dunham

Durwood Robinson Dunham, Sr. age 89 of New London, passed away on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at Bethany Woods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle on Thursday, September 13 from 6 PM until 8 PM. The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 14 at New London Methodist Church, 206 S. Main Street, New London, at 2:00 PM, officiated by Pastor Eileen Ayuso. He will lie in state for 30 minutes. Burial will follow at Stanly Gardens of Memory with military honors performed by the Stanly County DAV, Chapter 12. At other times, the family will meet at his home. Mr. Dunham was born in Bladen County on May 11, 1923 to the late William Mangum Dunham, Sr. and the late Clyde Robinson Dunham. He was also preceded in death by a brother, James Warren Dunham and a sister, Daphne Sue Dunham Soder. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Miriam Josephine Robbins Dunham of the home; one son, Durwood Robinson “Woody” Dunham, Jr. and his wife Melinda of Albemarle; three daughters, “Sister Joanna” Miriam Jo Dunham of Crozet, VA, Trudy Clyde Dunham of St. Paul, MN, Nancy Elizabeth Dunham, Tampa, FL; two grandchildren, Justin Dunham and Meghan Dunham; two brothers, William Mangum Dunham, Jr. of White Oak, NC, and John Ira Dunham of Fayetteville, NC; one sister, Virginia Dunham of Charlotte, NC and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Dunham was a graduate of White Oak High School in White Oak, NC. He proudly served his country in the USMC in China and Guam during World War II, in the engineering battalion. He was a member of New London Methodist Church. He taught Sunday school at Bethany United Methodist Church for many years. Gardening and fishing were two of his most enjoyable pastimes. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the Dunham family.
