Edna Rebecca Ferguson Helms, 90, of Midland, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 16, 2011, at Autumn Care of Marshville. Funeral services will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, at Hopewell Baptist Church, Monroe, with the Rev. Dr. Lee Pigg officiating assisted by Rev. Brian Austin. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends, following the interment, at the church fellowship building. Edna was born February 9, 1921, in Mecklenburg County, a daughter of the late Ira Ferguson and Ester Ferguson McNeill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Helms; sister, Blanche Grey; and brothers, Ned Ferguson, Merle Ferguson and Eugene Ferguson. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved and cared for her family and friends. Edna was a retiree of Lincoln Insurance Group and then worked part time for Wachovia. She has been a devoted member of Hopewell Baptist Church for over 60 years and was an active member of the Gleaners Discipleship Group and WMU. She has been an active member of Midland Chapter #260 Order of the Eastern Star since 1957 and has served as past Matron and Treasurer. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Gaye Helms of Hartsville, S. C.; Ronda Helms of the home; grandson and wife, Rodney and Janet Helms; granddaughter and husband, Rebecca and Michael Russell; grandson, Brian Helms; great-grandchildren, Ashley Helms, Ariana-Michael Russell and Autumn Russell. She was the second mother to Rachel F. Helms. The family would like to thank the staff at Autumn Care of Marshville for their loving and compassionate care of Edna during her stay there. Also, to the staff of Hospice for their guidance to the family during Edna’s illness. Memorials may be made to Hospice or the organization of your choice.
