Edna Starnes

June 7, 1922 — June 16, 2014

Edna Fortner Starnes, 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 15, 2014. She was born in Cabarrus County, the third child of William and Cora Amanda Fortner. She was predeceased by an infant daughter, her husband Homer Monroe Starnes, son, Terry William Starnes, and her three siblings. She is survived by her son, Tony Monroe Starnes and his wife, Terry; her grandchildren Cody Starnes, Kitt Starnes, and Megan Starnes; her great-grandchildren Eli and Sage; as well as her daughter-in law Amy Starnes; nephews Carl Beaver and Dwight Fortner; and beloved sister-in-law Ola Furr. Widowed at 38, Edna was a devoted mom to her two sons. She developed a fierce independence and “did it her way” for the ensuing 54 years! She supported her family and later herself during an over-30-year career with Cannon Mills’ overhauling department. Throughout her life she was an active member of Roberta United Methodist Church, where she had many cherished friends. Edna adored her granddaughters and her great-grandchildren and thoroughly enjoyed their company. She continued to be “young” even as she aged, and was still driving herself to the Food Lion, Big Lots and her other “haunts” just a few days before she died. A memorial service to celebrate Edna’s life is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 20, at Roberta United Methodist Church. The family will mingle with friends and visitors following the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Roberta United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice. There are many people Tony would like to thank for their concern for and assistance to his mother: Terry Killian, Kathy Taylor and other members of Roberta Methodist; Tim and Heather McGuinness and Hannah; Rick Cole; Adam Honeycutt and Julia Plott of Farm Fresh Market; the personnel at Edna’s neighborhood Food Lion; and all the many friends and neighbors who helped Edna continue to “do it her way” until the very end. She was a special lady who will be missed! Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord is serving the Starnes family.
