Edwin Sykes

Edwin “Ed” Thomas Sykes, 68, of Harrisburg, NC, passed away Friday, January 21, 2011, at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, NC. Mr. Sykes was born March 23, 1942, in Mecklenburg County. He was preceded in death by his father, Lee Van Sykes. Mr. Sykes was an electrical engineering supervisor with Duke Power in Charlotte. He was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Locust and a deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a sports fan of football and college basketball and loved gardening. The visitation will be 6 – 8 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23, at Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland. The funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, in the Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, Midland, officiated by Dr. Kinney Wallace and Rev. Jimmie Bartley. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Charlotte. At other times, the family will meet at his home, 109 Ridge Drive, Harrisburg. Survivors include his wife, Christine Laughridge Sykes, of the home; son, Rev. Daryl Sykes and wife, Lisa, of Midland; mother, Mildred Thomas Sykes, of Providence, NC; brothers, Lee Sykes, of Lake Villa, Illinois, and Dee Sykes, of Charlotte; sister, Sarah Denny, of Yanceyville, NC; and two granddaughters, Jessica and Daphne, of Midland.
