Elton Smith

Elton Dowd Smith, 91, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 18, 2018 at home with family by his side.

Elton was born January 10, 1927 in Rockingham, NC to the late Claude and Blanche Smith.  He was also preceded in death by brother, Robert W. Smith and son-in-law, Ron Taylor.

Elton served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.  He retired after 38 years as Chief Electrician from The Charlotte Pipe and Foundry.  He was a family man and loved being a daddy and granddaddy.  Elton was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include beloved wife of 69 years, Patricia Alden Smith; son, Jerry (Yon Kum) Smith; daughter, Linda S. (Joe) Covington; daughter, Sandy S. Taylor; daughter, Jeannie S. (Ron) Simpson; daughter, Jennifer S. (John) Martin; 12 grandchildren, Kristen, John, Matthew, Heather, Jason, Joshua, Gretchen, Angela, James, Ronnie, Kelly and Brandon; 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ann S. Webb and Judy S. McIntyre.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm, Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Harrisburg, 12115 University City Blvd, Harrisburg. The graveside service and burial will be 2:00 pm Thursday at Gethsemane Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, 1504 W. Sugar Creek Road, Charlotte.
