Elworth Bane Plyler, 94 years of age, of Albemarle, passed away March 27, 2017 at the Bermuda Village in Advance, NC.
Mr. Plyler was born November 8, 1922 in Stanly County to the late James Blair Plyler and the late Retha Lowder Plyler. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Whitfield Plyler in 2011; sisters, Hazel Plyler Ridenhour, and Louise Plyler Bates; and three brothers, Harold, Rosselle and Ewell Plyler.
He was educated in the Albemarle City Schools and served in the US Navy in World War II in the Pacific campaign. He graduated in 1947 from Shuford Institute of Barbering in Durham, NC. He was associated with Central Barber Shop in Albemarle but in 1952 he started his own business, Five Point Barber Shop, which he operated for over 50 years.
He was a 60+ year member of First Presbyterian Church in Albemarle and served as a Deacon there for several years. He served on the Albemarle Zoning Board for 42 years and the Stanly County Social Services Board for two terms. He held a Life Membership in the Albemarle Optimist Club, having been a member for over 60 years in which he served as both president and board member.
He was an avid golfer and played courses far and near with both friends and family members.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM - 10:45 AM on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, 126 West North St., Albemarle. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Elizabeth Ayscue, will follow at 11:00 AM on Wednesday in the church sanctuary. The burial will be at Fairview Memorial Park, 1425 East Main Street, Albemarle. He will lie in state from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle.
Survivors include son, David B. (Johannah) Plyler of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Peggy P. (Steve) Isenhour of Advance, NC; five grandchildren, Walt (Khette) Plyler, and Molly (Heath) Milligan, all of Atlanta, GA, Zach Isenhour of Winston Salem, NC, Caroline (Harold) Haye, and Charles Plyler, both of Atlanta, GA; five great-grandchildren, Luca Plyler, Miller Plyler, Crane Plyler, Bane Milligan, and Ellie Milligan, all of Atlanta, GA; and one sister, Jewel Plyler Lambert of Albemarle.
