Emmy Pharr
June 27, 1927 — September 30, 2016
Emmy Lou Long Pharr passed away peacefully at home in her sleep surrounded by her loving family the morning of September 30, 2016. She was born June 27, 1927 in Concord NC to Roy McDonald and Mary Alma Allman Long.
Emmy graduated from Concord High School, Class of 1944, continued her education at Lenior-Rhyne College, with studies in bookkeeping and was a meticulous bookkeeper for the family business. As a long-time member of Rocky River Presbyterian Church, she served her Lord in many ways. A talented musician, she was an accomplished organist, pianist and flutist. Her talents of music and teaching were offered as Assistant Church Organist, Sunday School teacher, Past President of Rocky River Women of the Church, circle leader and many other church services. In 2010, she was honored by her church with the Faithful Service Commendation for her committed service to the mission of Jesus Christ. In addition, she cherished time spent with friends volunteering for Meals on Wheels and other community efforts.
On August 2, 1947, she married Jones Lee “J. Lee” Pharr and they enjoyed 47 years of marriage together until his death in December 1994. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband and her brothers, Roy and Robert “Mack” Long as well as many other very special people in her life. “Miss Emmy” is survived by her four children, Mary (Joe) Griffin, James Lee “Jim” Pharr, Nancy (Steve) Haines and Alice (Edward) Williams. Her grandchildren Mandy (Brent) Williams, Cindy (Patrick) Spickard, Sarah (Dave) Loxton, David Haines, Kathryn Haines, Crystal (John) Dugger and Christopher Williams were very special to her. Her great grandchildren, Evan and Nathan Spickard brought tremendous joy to her life. A very special friend, Margaret Ann Novobilski (Rhodney) Reep was very much like another daughter to her. Her love for extended family of nieces, nephews and special friends were cherished.
The family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers during the last year of her life. Surrounding her daily were Alice Williams, Mandy Williams, Crystal Dugger, Mary Bost and Priscilla Clough. These angels on earth spent countless hours ensuring that she was compassionately cared for, was comfortable and most importantly, received her daily “dose” of chocolate - her favorite. Home life was most important for Emmy and it was most special that she was able to spend her last days at home under the care of the loving caregivers with Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County.
A Christian Celebration of Life will be held at Rocky River Presbyterian Church Sunday, October 2 at 3 pm with the Reverend Dr. Neal Carter officiating. The family will receive friends at 1:30 pm in the sanctuary prior to the service. Interment will be in the Rocky River Church cemetery.
