Ethel Louise Barnard (Ekie), formerly of Vestal, NY, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 26, 2013, at The Gardens Of Taylor Glen, Concord, NC with her loving family by her side. Ethel was born September 25, 1913 to Lawrence and Ethel (Cornell) Woughter in Binghamton, NY. She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Lewis M. Barnard Sr. (Babe), her brothers, Andrew and Lawrence, and her sisters, Iva MacAlmon, Eva Hubbard and Frances Stevens. She is survived by her son, Lewis M. Barnard Jr., and his wife, Deborah, of Concord, NC and many nieces and nephews. Ethel grew up on the family farm in rural New York State. She met her husband in 1930 at a church youth group outing in Great Bend, PA, and they were married September 16, 1933. She was a housewife and loving mother. She later worked for Spencer Corporation fitting medically prescribed foundations. She had many clients throughout the Southern Tier of New York. The family lived in Vestal, NY for many years before she and Babe retired to Venice, FL in 1983. She moved to Concord, NC in 2006 after the death of her husband in 2002, living at The Gardens of Taylor Glen. She loved the Lord with all of her heart. She was a member of the First Assembly of God in Binghamton, NY for many years, serving in many ways. She was a very talented person. She played the piano and had a beautiful voice. She sang solos and sang in a trio with two of her nieces. She loved to paint and do needlework. A memorial service for Ethel will be held in the Chapel at The Gardens Of Taylor Glen, Concord, NC on Thursday, February 7, at 11:00 a.m. Her family wishes to thank the staff at The Gardens Of Taylor Glen for their loving care of Ethel. Memorial donations may be made to Baptist Retirement Homes benevolence fund at The Gardens of Taylor Glen, 3700 Taylor Glen Lane, Concord, NC 28027. The funeral service and burial will be scheduled in New York in late spring and details will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are being made by Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord, NC and Coleman and Daniels Funeral Home in Endicott, NY.
