Eugene Troy Dabbs, 87, of Concord, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 surrounded by family at his residence in Concord.
Mr. Dabbs was born on December 31, 1934 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina to the late Walter E. Dabbs and the late Dora McSwain Dabbs. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Angie Dabbs. He is survived by his wife Betty Dabbs, son Terry Dabbs and Michele, daughter Kim and husband Chip Harward, grandchildren Jazmin and CJ Harward, as well as brothers Pete and Hoyle Dabbs, along with his sister Kathryn Yokley.
Eugene, known by most as Gene, was a man of God who really did love his neighbor as himself. He touched the hearts of many through his love and spirit. Throughout his life, Gene accomplished many things. Joining the U.S. Army at 18, Gene traveled the world as a paratrooper. As Gene returned back to Concord, NC in 1957, he decided to further his education and obtain his Associates degree in Science of Business. Meeting his beloved wife Betty, he described as “love at first sight,” was only the beginning to the next chapter of his fulfilling life ahead. Being together 64 years, Gene raised a beautiful family of three kids, while working as a fixer in the sock mill. It is said that he never missed a game or band concert for his kids attending Concord High School. Loving his community, Gene decided to coach the little league baseball team of the Concord Allstars, where his team went on to win the National Championship in 1980. In his later years, he became the “Best Paw Paw in the world” to his two grandchildren. He especially enjoyed and took pride in taking care of his yard and gardening every summer. As Gene will be missed by many, he will surely be remembered as a great husband, father, brother, coach, and friend.
