Eugene Gurley
October 25, 1931 — January 20, 2015
Eugene Adam Gurley, 83 years of age, of Albemarle, passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at his home.
Gene was born October 25, 1931 in Thomasville, North Carolina to the late John Adam Gurley and the late Millie Mae Hinson Gurley. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Doris Gurley Isenhour.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Friday, January 23, 2015 at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel in Albemarle, officiated by Rev. Sheila Bishop and Rev. Darrell Huneycutt. The burial will follow at the New London Cemetery, 331 Spring Street, New London. Military honors will be conducted by the North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard. At other times the family will be gathering at the home.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Elaine Lowder Gurley of the home; daughters, Candis Gurley Smith and Kristi Gurley Hatley and husband Brad, both of Albemarle; grandchildren, Benjamin Smith and wife Hailey; Elizabeth Candis Forrest and husband Brantley, John Christopher Smith, Jake Alexander Smith, Kari Hatley Poplin and husband Jeff, Keli Hatley Barbee and husband RJ, Zachary Brad Hatley and Kristin Candis Hatley, all of Albemarle; great-grandchildren, Cadence Smith, Caitlynn Smith, Camden Eugene Smith, Jace Forrest, Mason Poplin and Finley Barbee.
Gene honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a self-employed brick mason. He was owner and operator of Gurley Masonry. For many years, he was heavily involved in home construction.Gene attended Bethany United Methodist Church in Albemarle.
