Evelyn Marie Little Barbee is “finally home†after a seven year battle with ill health and dementia. She was married for 70 years to M. A. Barbee, who preceded her in death. She was born June 14, 1920, to Charlie and Carrie Little of Locust and was the youngest sister of twelve children--all who preceded her in death. Evelyn is survived by a daughter, Sue B. Morrow, and her husband, David, of Charlotte. She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Barbee, of Locust, who is survived by his wife, Judy. She had five grandchildren, Kristi Morrow Butler and husband John of Cary, Joe Morrow of Peachtree City, GA, Sherri Barbee of Denver, NC, Beth Anne Aheron and husband Steve of Stoneville and Tanya Barbee of Concord. She also had 10 great grandchildren, Carrie Butler Laughridge, Rachel Butler Hibbard, Evelyn Butler Stone, Melea Butler, Joseph Morrow, Daniel Morrow, Caroline Morrow, Justice Aheron, Brandon Steele and Brittney Steele. Evelyn was a hard worker, first on the farm growing up and at home. Her employment years were spent in the Wiscasset Mills, the Lillian Mills, Belvedere Hosiery and last at Stanly Knitting Mills in Oakboro where she retired after 25 years. Evelyn knew her Bible well and studied many hours weekly to teach a women’s Sunday School class for 40 years at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member. The last two years were spent at Elm Croft Assisted Living Center in Charlotte where she received wonderful, loving care. The family is extremely grateful to all of those there who became like family to them. During the last few months the family has been lovingly assisted by Hospice of Charlotte. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Charlotte or Stanly County and to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Services will be held at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Oakboro, on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. The service will be conducted by Dr. Wayne Bennett, pastor, and Rev. John M. Butler. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will follow the burial in the Fellowship Hall. Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the Barbee family.
