Biography Evelyn Powell Hatley, 96 years of age, of Oakboro, passed away Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Stanly Regional Medical Center in Albemarle, NC.
Mrs. Hatley was born September 28, 1919 in Kannapolis to the late Robert Edgar Powell and the late Maude Swicegood Powell. She was also preceded in death by husband, John Wiley Hatley, sisters, Hazel Ault and Jamima DeMarcus, and a brother, Robert J. Powell.
Evelyn was a graduate of Cannon High School in Kannapolis and was a former member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church and currently Oakboro First Baptist Church. She was a member of Adult Choir, President of Baptist Women, WMU Director, and taught the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class. She was a former Precinct Chairman of Big Lick Two, President of Stanly County Democratic Women, and Eighth District Director of Democratic Women of NC. Evelyn served on the Planning and Zoning Board for the Town of Oakboro, Charter Member of Oakboro Regional Museum, President of Oakboro Garden Club, member of Stanly County Board of Health, member of the Social Services Board, and one of four partners of Hatley's Hardware and Gifts in Oakboro. She was a current member and Treasurer of the Lions Club.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm, Sunday, December 6, 2015 at Oakboro First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 322 N. Main Street, Oakboro. The funeral service will be on Sunday at 3:00 pm in the sanctuary at Oakboro First Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Terrell Watts. Burial will follow at the Oakboro Cemetery at 1397 North Main Street, Oakboro.
Survivors include nephews, Charles Michael McLain, Robert Joseph Powell, Jr., and John Thomas Powell, nieces, Jane Hatley Barnhardt, Mildred Hatley Prothero, Robin Powell Moore, Gigi DeMarcus Bringle, Cynthia Powell Waller, Ann Powell Lambert, Leilee Ault Taseveski, and Melody Ault Cheshire.
