Faye Morton

Faye Burleson Morton, 94 years of age, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at her home in Albemarle, North Carolina. Mrs. Morton, one of ten children, was born May 5, 1920 in Stanly County to the late Homer Cleveland Burleson and the late Ethel Efird Burleson. She was married to Homer Rufus Morton, Jr. who preceded in death in 1983. Of that union was born a daughter, Brenda Rochelle, and a son, Gary Lamar, both of whom are survivors. She is also survived by five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mrs. Morton graduated from Endy High School in 1939 at the top of her class academically. She was also an accomplished athlete. She led her team to 4 basketball championships and was voted "Most Athletic Girl in Stanly County" her senior year. Mrs. Morton went to work at Wiscassett Knitting Mill in 1941, sewing full fashioned hose and operating the knitting machines. Many women were hired during this time because the men were deployed to do battle during World War II. She was employed by Austin Hosiery and Sweater Mill for several years, where she seamed up nylon stockings and sewed sweaters. Mrs. Morton came to be known as an icon in Stanly County and due to her many years of exceptional service at Ritchie's Grill and Whitley's Luncheonette. She is widely remembered for her kindness to all patrons. She was featured in a book written by Andy Angel, a local radio host in 1950. Mrs. Morton was a member Poplins Grove Baptist Church throughout her life and volunteered her talents in numerous ways. She taught Sunday School for 40+ years, sang in the choir, directed Christmas pageants, was president of theWomen's Missionary Union, and taught Vacation Bible School classes. Mrs. Morton enjoyed many hobbies. She liked crossword puzzles, watching sports, gardening, tending her lawn and flower beds. She was well known for her beautiful yard. In addition, she loved to cook and bake. She shared recipes with anyone who asked. She was noted for her fresh coconut cakes, sweet potato pies, and pecan pies. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Richard Carlisle, will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, May 23, 2014 at Poplin Grove Baptist Church, 202 Poplins Grove Church Road in Albemarle. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
