Fletcher Lee Whitley Fletcher Whitley, 83, beloved husband, father and grandfather of Locust, died November 25, 2009, at home. He was born in Stanly County, NC on September 24, 1926, son of the late Walter Whitley and Eva Hartsell. He was preceded in death by his parents, son F L Whitley, Jr. and brother Marvin Whitley of Charlotte, NC. Whitley served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the South Pacific. His career after the war was primarily in building. He was self employed as Whitley Construction Company for several years. Then employed and retired from Locust Lumber Company Inc. of Locust, NC. Throughout Whitley’s life, he was always an inquisitive person and eager for new challenges. He enjoyed his retirement in cabinetry. He was employed by Eudy’s Cabinet Manufacturing Inc. and Little’s D E Cabinet. A cheerful person, Fletcher good-naturedly teased his family and friends. Strangers usually didn’t remain strangers for long around him. Whitley, a man of deep humility, integrity and courage was devoted to his family and church, First Baptist Church of Locust, NC. He was a very active member serving as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nina, his son Jerry and wife Audrey of Charlotte, NC, Linda Barbee and husband Rex of Locust, NC, grandson Chad Whitley and wife Jodi, great granddaughter Kenzie of Harrisburg, NC. Step-granddaughter Elizabeth Couturier and husband Scotty, step-great grandchildren Grace and James of Matthews, NC , step-grandson Thomas Whitley and wife Trinity of Shelby, NC., brother Ernest Whitley and wife Ruth of Albemarle, NC and sister-n-law Hazel Helms of Oakboro, NC. Special thank you to our wonderful neighbors, friends, church family, Dr. Kenny Wallace, Veterans care givers, and Hospice care givers during this time. A service celebrating Whitley’s life will be held 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 27, 2009 at First Baptist Church, Locust, NC. Officiating will be Dr. Kenny Wallace.
